Following a month long period of campaigns, Jinja East Constituency yesterday went the polls with Forum for Democratics Change (FDC)’s Paul Mwiru Emerging the new MP elect for the area.
Mwiru won with 7,715 votes followed by NRM’s Nathan Nabeeta with 6,057 ballots cast in his favour. The third and forth place were held by Democratic party’s Alex Mufumbiro with 294 votes and Independent candidate Dhikusooka Cranmer, 28 votes respectively. The other candidate in the race Osinde Onzu of the Uganda People Congress managed to bag 16 votes.
As news of the results from various polling centers trickled in earlier on, Pro Mwiru Supporters were seen running up and down the streets of the town amid alot of Jubilation.
It had been hard to predict the final outcome of the election and all candidates were anxiously awaiting the final results.
Security had been tightened with heavy deployment of the police and other security organs on the streets.
As the crowds got unruly earlier on, the police had to employ tear gas cannisters and rubber bullets to disperse the rowdy people.
By Mid-night the town had calmed down and returned to normal. Truckloads of Police and Anti riot personel that had been brought in to beef up security could be seen assembling at the Jinja town police station in preparation for return to their usual areas of operations.
