Former New Taxi park

New taxi park to re-open soon

The reconstruction of the New Taxi Park will be completed this month, city authorities have said. Mr Robert Kalumba, the deputy spokesperson Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) said after reconstruction, all taxis which were operating within the area will resume work from the facility.

The reopening of the park was expected in May, but Mr Kalumba attributed the delay to additional structures including administration blocks for KCCA and a police station which were not in the initial plans. He added that the rebuilt taxi park will accommodate all the taxis which were there before the demolition. The taxis currently operate on a small terminal on Namirembe Road and areas around Mengo-Kisenyi bus terminal and Namayiba Bus Park.

In November 2012, city authorities relocated taxis from the New Taxi Park to pave way for the rehabilitation. The taxis affected included those operating on the Bombo, Masaka, Mityana and Entebbe roads.

The area has since been sealed off under the supervision of KCCA. The entry into the park was restricted to the police, the KCCA enforcement team and Sterling Civil Construction workers who were contracted to redevelop the park.

'Park is gone'
However, the chairman of the Drivers and Conductors Association, Mr Mustafa Mayambala, recently said KCCA is designing the New Taxi Park into a parking yard. He told the tribunal investigating the alleged misconduct of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago that what KCCA is developing at the enclosed site of the new taxi park was something "very different|" from what the public expects.

"I am sure the park is gone," he said. "What is being done there is not a taxi park. Our worries as taxi operators downtown, is that the park could be turned into a park yard," Mr Mayambala said.
